Kids Drinking Water

Everyone and everything needs water to grow especially kids. Kids drinking water is becoming a growing concern. Often times, they are not consuming enough. During the summer months, we are more aware of carrying water bottles, supplying our little ones with juice. Then, when fall and winter come along, kids drinking water does not seem to be on parents’ minds. Although water does not have the nutritional contents that juice or milk has, water is extremely important in the development of kids.

The Importance of Water:
Water helps digestion, constipation, and proper blood circulation. Water regulates body temperature and transports important nutrients and oxygen to body cells.

Water makes up between 55-78% of a human’s body weight. When a body does not have enough water or fluids, the body suffers from dehydration. Some symptoms include diarrhea, vomiting, nausea, excessive sweating.

If a child is dehydrated, they might develop headaches, perform poorly in school, or are unable to focus. And here we thought they were just going through a phase… For these reasons, parents and caretakers need to make kids drinking water a priority. Doctors recommend children drink water between meals and whenever they ask for a drink. Most doctors, though, recommend drinking milk at mealtimes for nutritional reasons.

When it’s hot, drink more water
Did you know that kids are more likely to get dehydrated than adults? Their constant physical activity puts them more at risk to develop heatstroke and exhaustion. This is particularly true during the hot summer months. Watch out for signs of heatstroke like dizziness and fatigue.

Juice vs. Water
It might seem like a good, healthy alternative to give your child juice, but truth is, juice is loaded with sugar. Several studies show that kids who consume sugary drinks are more likely to be obese and develop serious health conditions like diabetes. Surely, you’ve heard the statistic: 15% of school-age kids are overweight in the US. Start them off right by teaching the value of kids drinking water instead of juice. The best way a parent can do this is by example. If your child watches you drink water, they too will drink more water.

Ways to Encourage Kids Drinking Water
Kids drinking water shouldn’t be such a task. Here are some fun ideas:

• Carry extra water bottles.
• Add a splash of lemon juice to their water container
• Find decorative cups reserved only for water consumption.
• Fill a container with water and add berries and orange slices for decoration.
• Making ice cubes in the different shapes will get kids drinking water.
