Mine Spill To Affect CO, UT, NM, AZ, & Mexico

America’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a water warning for areas near Durango, Colorado spreading all the way to Mexico. Last week, the Animas River suffered a toxic spill from a nearby mine, resulting in a mustard-colored contamination. 3 million gallons of lead, cadmium, arsenic, copper, manganese, and iron spilled when federal EPA workers were moving earth trying to control rising water levels in Gold King Mine and prevent an incident such as this one.

“What wasn’t a problem in the past is becoming a problem now because of the increased use of mountain water,” says geology and alpine hydrology professor Mark Williams at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Mark has worked with the EPA in the past to mitigate polluted water from abandoned Colorado mines. Western states together contain 500,000 abandoned mine sites that have the potential to cause pollution issues such as this one.

But issue at hand remains how the water is going to affect the rest of the country and Mexico. The watershed that the Animas River flows into has already contaminated Colorado and Utah and will continue to flow down through the Navajo nation (some parts of Arizona and New Mexico) and Mexico. Farmers, industrial buildings, and the community surrounding the area of the spill have been warned not to use the water until it is deemed safe again. In the meantime, the EPA has sent out teams to clean the river thoroughly so that it can start to self-heal and bring wildlife back to the area. People living in areas affected by the spill can now file claims with the EPA.

Staying Hydrated During a Drought

Chlorine and Food Allergies

GMOs, or genetically modified organisms, are in most of the foods and drinks we consume. Some studies show that the long-term effects of GMOs can cause damage to humans. Also, data shows that GMOs grown with pesticides and watered with chlorinated tap water result in higher numbers of food allergies. FARE, or Food Allergy Research and Education, says that researchers estimate that up to 15 million Americans suffer from some type of food allergy. Our children have it worse as this disease is exponentially growing every year. Presently, 1 in every 13 children in the US has a food allergy. The economic cost of this creates nearly $25 billion per year for America.

The most common allergies are those to dairy, peanuts, wheat, fish, shellfish, and soy. According to the CDC, these types of allergies make up 90 percent of food allergies. Symptoms vary from mild rashes to life-threatening allergic reactions. Many people carry Epi pens in case they are exposed to a food they are allergic to.

The specific chemical that causes issues for humans is dichlorophenols. It is a type of chlorine in some pesticides that kills bacteria. If consumed in large numbers, it can cause renal failure, damage organs, and in some situations even be fatal.  Recently, researchers followed 10,348 participants in a U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Of them, 2,548 had dichlorophenol levels measured in urine; 2,211 were included into the study. Food allergies were found in 411 of them, while 1,016 had environmental allergies. It was concluded that the pesticide chemical could be ingested from eating different fruits and some juices. This study suggested that the use of pesticides and other chemicals are indeed associated with food allergies. Unfortunately, it also showed that the trend is increasing.

Some people think that the easiest solution to prevent food allergies is to switch to bottled water so that they aren’t being exposed to as much chlorine. However, this is not the best solution because bottled water does not include all ingredients on its labels. One alternative is to know what you are buying by reading the labels. Luckily, organic foods follow specific codes where organic pesticides must be used in order to be labeled “organic.” Laundry and cleaning products with chlorine should be avoided. MIT Finds Way to Reuse Water from Fracking

Fracking, or the process of extracting oil from underground reservoirs, takes a lot of time, money, and water. But humans are extremely dependent on this technique because it brings out a natural resource that fuels transportation methods that we use in our everyday lives. Cars, buses, trains, and planes are just a few of the ways we get around that use oil as fuel. So how can a process that is so important still be so inefficient? Fracking wastes millions of gallons of water per year, water that could be reused for other purposes.

So why isn’t it being reused? Because when water is pressurized down into the ground to extract oil, it becomes contaminated and deemed “brimy”. This type of water is discarded into deep injection wells and new, clean water is bought to continue the fracking process.

Luckily a company that works with MIT has come up with a genius process to reuse some of these million gallons that are wasted every year. This company, called Gradient Corporation, has created a cost-effective process to treat brimy oilfield water for reuse. Depending on the location and type of fracking, carrier gas extraction (CGE) or selective chemical extraction (SCE) is used to clean the brimy water. Carrier gas extraction heats produced water into vapor and condenses it back into water without contaminants. In selective chemical extraction, chemical reactions remove specific contaminants. Both processes are effective, easy to use, and will save millions of dollars annually for fracking companies.

Reusing water is important, especially at a time when the West Coast is in a severe drought. It is important that every person does their part in helping to save water and save our environment. How San Diego is Saving Water during the Drought

Last week the San Diego community received the 2014 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report handbook. In it contains information about where the city’s water is sourced from, how the water treatment process works, how the city is diversifying our water, and how the city is moving towards more sustainable practices.

By 2035, the city of San Diego plans to have 1/3 of its drinking water supplied through a program that purifies recycled water. It is planned to produce about 15 million gallons of water for the city each day. The technology used to do so requires membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, advanced oxidation with ultraviolet light, and hydrogen peroxide. The city tested this method through a one-year project using 9,000 water quality tests and daily monitoring to ensure that no contaminants were present in the recycled water. The California Department of Public Health and San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board approved the recycled water purifying process as it met all federal and state drinking water standards.

San Diego is also exploring ways to use groundwater basins to provide water storage, capture rainwater for recycling purposes, and implement an ocean desalination plant to produce desalinated water for use throughout San Diego County.

The 2014 Water Quality Report also states that the city has been mandated to reduce its water use by 16% as a whole. They are asking residents and businesses to identify where they can most save water and give tips on the best ways to do so. Some of these include: only watering your lawn two times per week, putting low-flow heads on your faucets and showerheads, and evaluating your pipes for possible water leaks. They are also urging residents to use the City’s Public Utilities Department website, wastenowater.org, for water-saving resource guides.

Is Your Local San Diego County Beach Water Unsafe?

The California drought has taught us many things. 1) We need to use less water in our homes 2) More natural disasters occur when our land is too dry 3) Less rainfall is good for our oceans? Yes, this is true. Rainfall has actually polluted the waters along the San Diego coast in the past due to the large amount of toxins that the water picks up along the way. So, less rainfall=less polluted waters.


According to the environmental group Heal The Bay, which assesses water quality for Southern California beaches and assigns them grades, 96% of the area’s 72 beaches are pretty healthy. That means that out of an A-F grade, they received either an A or a B. Their health ratings have increased 2% in the past 5 years, partially due to a program that plants water cleansing plants in creeks to filter water going to the ocean.

The areas that were rated among the cleanest in San Diego County included San Elijo State Beach and Cardiff State Beach in Encinitas, Ocean Beach Pier, Point Loma Lighthouse and Silver Strand in Coronado.

However, the areas that proved to have the worst water quality were Cottonwood Creek Outlet at Moonlight Beach in Encinitas, Seascape Surf Beach Park in Solana Beach, San Diego River Dog Beach in Ocean Beach, the pier and Cortez Avenue at Imperial Beach, the mouth of the Tijuana River, and beaches at Border Field State Park.

Sarah Sikich, who is vice president of Heal the Bay, says, “In a time of severe drought, it’s madness to send billions of gallons of runoff to pollute the sea when we could be capturing and cleansing that water for daily use. The rains will return, and when they do we need to capture this valuable resource to maximize our local water supplies and keep polluted water out of our ocean.”

Why do our brains need water?

Have you ever had a long night out with lots of drinking and experienced a pounding headache the next day? Well, that’s practically how your brain feels every time you’re dehydrated. The brain needs water for every function it performs because about 60% of its makeup is water. In the brain, water is stored in cells called vacuoles. It uses those cells to distribute water to its complex systems of cells and neurons. When you think, you’re sending electrical impulses across the brain, making connections, forming tendrils of thought and memory (called dendrites), and creating chemical reactions to allow this process to occur. It is a complex biological process that can’t be compared.

Water in the brain acts as a cooling device and also a filter for chemicals and other byproducts.  In the rest of the body, blood performs this task, but in the brain, water does this so that the brain does not overheat or get blocked channels that could cause problems. So, having enough water in your body is extremely important for cognitive function. Here are 6 signs and symptoms that you may be dehydrated:

1) You feel hungry/thirsty

2) You’re tired

3) Your urine is darker in color

4) You feel like you can’t perform cognitive functions as well (math, language, creativity, problem solving)

5) You feel that you can’t concentrate

6) Your short-term and long-term memory is reduced

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, DRINK WATER! If you become so dehydrated that you feel dizzy or lightheaded, it is best to see a doctor. You may not be drinking enough water every day, making all of these symptoms more likely and making you less able to perform daily tasks. It’s not easy to say exactly how much water a person should drink every day. This number varies for each person depending on their height, weight, daily activity, and metabolism. If you don’t know how many glasses you should drink, follow the “8 glasses a day” rule and ask your doctor the amount that is best for you.

BPA. How Does it Really Affect Us?

Have you ever wondered what’s in those water bottles that you hear about being detrimental to your health but that everyone uses? It’s BPA, or Bisphenol A. But what does that really mean and how does it affect our bodies?

Well, BPA is an industrial chemical that disrupts hormone messages. It’s been used since 1960 to make certain plastics; water bottles, baby bottles, toys, and some consumer goods. Some canned goods not only contain this harmful plastic but also include resin in its deadly composition. It increases estrogen and decreases testosterone. It has also been linked to Type 2 diabetes and several types of cancers.

These days many bottles are required to be labeled if they contain traces of BPA.  If you see a recycling symbol on a bottle, you should check for its density. #2 HDPE (high density polyethylene), #4 LDPE (low density polyethylene), and #5 PP(polypropylene) are safe to use. They are intended for a single usage, but it is common for people to reuse plastic bottles even after one use.  If you see a water bottle with the #7 recycling symbol, you should probably not drink from it. The good state of California only has so many reservoirs in its groundwater that can be tapped and used for drinking water. Some of these reservoirs are used for the biggest cities, like L.A., San Francisco, and San Diego, as city water that comes through their tap. But other reservoirs lie underneath land bought by bottled water companies like Nestlé and Crystal Gyser. These companies not only take the water underneath the land below them, they also suck up water from entire communities surrounding them.
