The Latest: Unclear When Boil-Water Advisory Will Lift

COLUMBIA, S.C. — Oct 9, 2015, 12:35 PM ET

The latest on the rainstorm that pounded parts of the East Coast (all times local):

12:15 p.m.

While Columbia officials are confident they will not lose water service, they can’t say when most of the city’s 375,000 customers will be able to stop boiling water before they drink it.

Assistant City Manager Missy Gentry says Columbia is trucking in water and laying pipes from two nearby rivers to make sure water remains in the Columbia Canal, which is the chief source for drinking water.

An advisory telling people to boil water was issued during Sunday’s rainstorm, and Columbia Utilities Director Joey Jaco says he can’t say when that may be lifted. He says crews must finish repairing numerous breaks in the system first.

The advisory has left thousands scrambling for bottled water and businesses shut down. Restaurants that are open are serving meals off paper plates and drinks from cans.

The largest hospital in Columbia shut down its water supply for 12 hours as it set up an alternative source of water.

Palmetto Health Richland Hospital shut down its water system at 6 p.m. Thursday, restoring service at 6 a.m. Friday.

Hospital officials said they acted because the city of Columbia does not know when it will be able to provide safe drinking water.

Hospital spokeswoman Tammie Epps says the U.S. Army has provided a reverse osmosis system to purify the water so it can be used. Epps says the system was flushed and cleaned during the 12-hour shutdown. She says the water from the Army system is being tested for 24 hours before it can be relied upon.

The hospital is continuing to use the un-filtered, city-provided water for its air conditioning and certain other equipment.

MIT Finds Way to Reuse Water from Fracking

fracking oil

Fracking, or the process of extracting oil from underground reservoirs, takes a lot of time, money, and water. But humans are extremely dependent on this technique because it brings out a natural resource that fuels transportation methods that we use in our everyday lives. Cars, buses, trains, and planes are just a few of the ways we get around that use oil as fuel. So how can a process that is so important still be so inefficient? Fracking wastes millions of gallons of water per year, water that could be reused for other purposes.

So why isn’t it being reused? Because when water is pressurized down into the ground to extract oil, it becomes contaminated and deemed “brimy”. This type of water is discarded into deep injection wells and new, clean water is bought to continue the fracking process.

Oil Rig

Luckily a company that works with MIT has come up with a genius process to reuse some of these million gallons that are wasted every year. This company, called Gradient Corporation, has created a cost-effective process to treat brimy oilfield water for reuse. Depending on the location and type of fracking, carrier gas extraction (CGE) or selective chemical extraction (SCE) is used to clean the brimy water. Carrier gas extraction heats produced water into vapor and condenses it back into water without contaminants. In selective chemical extraction, chemical reactions remove specific contaminants. Both processes are effective, easy to use, and will save millions of dollars annually for fracking companies.

Reusing water is important, especially at a time when the West Coast is in a severe drought. It is important that every person does their part in helping to save water and save our environment. There are so many ways that you can save water, but one important way that also improves your health is to buy a water filtration system for your home that reuses backwash water. Think of it as your own system, like fracking, that can normally waste backwash water. Filtercon Technologies has developed a system that does just the opposite; reuses that water for other purposes while still purifying the water that goes into your home. Want to know more? The Health Effects of Drinking Water Contamination

According to the Ralph Nader Research Institute, “U.S. drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer.” Toxic chemicals that can come from anywhere like agricultural runoff. The toxic water could possible even carry diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, malaria, intestinal worms, trachoma, typhoid, and many other serious conditions. Not to mention, numerous water contamination from natural occurring chemicals and minerals such as arsenic, uranium, manufacturing processes, or sewer overflows. All of these dangerous additions to your water can lead to adverse health effects.

Consuming contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal illness, reproductive problems, and neurological disorders. Infants, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, people of all ages with weak immune systems can be even more susceptible to illnesses from bad water. With water being something we all need and consume on a daily basis, we need to avoid all the water-related diseases and contaminants in our public water systems.

Visual clues water drinkers need to look for are cloudiness in the water, foamy water, white depositions in pipes, blue-green stains on sinks, and yellow water. If you suspect lead in the pipes, make sure to have your water tested for lead. Lead can cause delays in an infant or child’s mental or physical development. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should also avoid any lead exposure to protect their children.

One of the many solutions for families looking to get healthy, pure water is purchasing a water filter. Home Systems is an even better solution. Not only will you be drinking pure water, you can shower or wash your hands with it. Our customers have seen a noticeable difference in how their skin responded to the change in water. Salmonella biofilms incredibly resistant to powerful disinfectants

Sunday 19 January 2014 – 12am PST

Once Salmonella bacteria get into a food processing facility and have an opportunity to form a biofilm on surfaces, it is likely to be extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible, to kill it, according to research published ahead of print in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

Researchers from National University of Ireland, Galway conducted a study in which they attempted to kill Salmonella biofilms on a variety of hard surfaces, using three types of disinfectant.

“We found that it was not possible to kill the Salmonella cells using any of the three disinfectants, if the biofilm was allowed to grow for seven days before the disinfectant was applied,” says Mary Corcoran, a researcher on the study. Even soaking the biofilms in disinfectant for an hour and a half failed to kill them

The impetus for the study was a European outbreak in which 160 people in 10 countries became ill with gastroenteritis(vomiting and diarrhea) from the Agona serotype ofSalmonella, says Corcoran. That outbreak was traced to meat from a major food-processing facility.

Dangers of Swimming Pools

Cooling off in the swimming pool might sound refreshing this hot summer. However, before you and your kids go splashing around, you should beware of the toxins in chlorinated swimming pools.

swimming pools
Why Chlorine?
The act of treating water with chlorine started in the 1800s but became a regular feature in the early 1900s. Since then, several water districts throughout the US continue to treat their water with chlorine. It is added to many swimming pools because it has the ability to kill harmful bacteria. Chlorine in swimming pools is supposed to be regulated, but often times, it is not.

Chlorine By-Product in Urine
In a study by the University of Cordoba in Spain found haloacetic acids (HAAs), a by-product of chlorine present in the urine of swimmers only 30 minutes after they got out of the swimming pool. The EPA has limited the amount of this chemical in our drinking water because of its association with cancer and birth defects.

Bathing in chlorinated water is just as bad as doing a few laps in chlorinated swimming pools. Chlorine is absorbed through the skin very quickly. In some cases, when testing tap water, the results will show significant amounts of chlorine to maintain a swimming pool. With measures like these, what’s the point of rinsing off after a swim if it’s just with more chlorinated water?

Test Your Water
Pick up a chlorine test kit from your neighborhood swimming pool supply store. Fill up a container with water. It should change colors, depending on how much chlorine there is. Next, fill up another container of water and this time soak your hand for 60 seconds before testing. The water will show hardly any chlorine. Why? Because in just 60 seconds, your body absorbed the chlorine. Imagine bathing a toddler in this water.

Scientific Findings
Chlorine is a pesticide used to kill living organisms. When we consume chlorinated water, it destroys our cells and tissue as discovered by Dr. Robert Carlson, a well-respected researcher from the University of Minnesota. Chlorine has been linked to heart complications and circulatory problems in a study by Dr. Joseph Price. It has also been linked to several cancers.

Although swimming pools are fun in the warm summer months, the best way to be chlorine free is to invest in a whole house water filtration system. Your health is worth it.

Why You Should Use A Reusable Water Bottle

Don’t let all the controversy with reusable water bottles deter you. There are plenty of reasons why you should be carrying one around this summer.

water bottles
Most water bottles were intended for one time use. We are all guilty of refilling them, but there are some serious dangers associated in refilling these types of water bottles. The more you drink, the more you add material to landfills. Let’s not even start with the BPA leaching. Using an eco-friendly reusable water bottle, you don’t have to continuously go to the store to buy more water bottles.

Money, Money, Money
Water can be expensive. If you invest in a whole house water filtration system, the cost in the long run is less expensive than continuously buying water bottles. In fact, you’ll save money each month. Or even a small filtration system that is not as costly will help save your family money. With these systems, you can get clean, filtered water straight from the tap. The best part of this is that you will know where your water comes from. You don’t have to worry about contamination or BPA leaches.

water bottle
If you have water more available to you, you will drink more water. This is particularly important for kids who are too busy running, jumping, and climbing to drink water. During the summer months, it can be a concern. Keeping pregnant women hydrated is also crucial for the baby’s health. Carrying around a reusable water bottle is an easy and great reminder to drink more water.

If you are looking for a good water bottle to buy without the worry of leaching strange chemicals, consider buying this great water bottle.
