According to the Ralph Nader Research Institute, “U.S. drinking water contains more than 2,100 toxic chemicals that can cause cancer.” Toxic chemicals that can come from anywhere like agricultural runoff. The toxic water could possible even carry diseases such as diarrhea, cholera, malaria, intestinal worms, trachoma, typhoid, and many other serious conditions. Not to mention, numerous water contamination from natural occurring chemicals and minerals such as arsenic, uranium, manufacturing processes, or sewer overflows. All of these dangerous additions to your water can lead to adverse health effects.

Consuming contaminated water can cause gastrointestinal illness, reproductive problems, and neurological disorders. Infants, young children, pregnant women, the elderly, people of all ages with weak immune systems can be even more susceptible to illnesses from bad water. With water being something we all need and consume on a daily basis, we need to avoid all the water-related diseases and contaminants in our public water systems.

Visual clues water drinkers need to look for are cloudiness in the water, foamy water, white depositions in pipes, blue-green stains on sinks, and yellow water. If you suspect lead in the pipes, make sure to have your water tested for lead. Lead can cause delays in an infant or child’s mental or physical development. Pregnant women and nursing mothers should also avoid any lead exposure to protect their children.

One of the many solutions for families looking to get healthy, pure water is purchasing a water filter. Home Systems is an even better solution. Not only will you be drinking pure water, you can shower or wash your hands with it. Our customers have seen a noticeable difference in how their skin responded to the change in water. Salmonella biofilms incredibly resistant to powerful disinfectants

Sunday 19 January 2014 – 12am PST

Once Salmonella bacteria get into a food processing facility and have an opportunity to form a biofilm on surfaces, it is likely to be extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible, to kill it, according to research published ahead of print in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

Researchers from National University of Ireland, Galway conducted a study in which they attempted to kill Salmonella biofilms on a variety of hard surfaces, using three types of disinfectant.

“We found that it was not possible to kill the Salmonella cells using any of the three disinfectants, if the biofilm was allowed to grow for seven days before the disinfectant was applied,” says Mary Corcoran, a researcher on the study. Even soaking the biofilms in disinfectant for an hour and a half failed to kill them

The impetus for the study was a European outbreak in which 160 people in 10 countries became ill with gastroenteritis(vomiting and diarrhea) from the Agona serotype ofSalmonella, says Corcoran. That outbreak was traced to meat from a major food-processing facility.

Top 10 Reasons Why Filtered Water Is Better for You

Is filtered water really better for you? The answer is YES!

You might be like most Americans, buying bottled water. Maybe you carry around a water bottle to get your recommended 8 glasses a day. If you don’t know much about filtered water, you should.

Here are the top ten reasons why you should dump the water bottle and drink filtered water:
girl drinking bottled water
1. It tastes good. For those of you who have tasted filtered water, you understand the taste difference. There are no chemicals- no chlorine, no contaminants. It even smells different.

2. Water filters remove lead and other chemicals from water before you drink it. That way, your body is drinking clean, pure water without harmful substances. You might think that if you continue to drink bottled water, you are safe from such chemicals. However, you can absorb chlorine and other impurities when bathing.

3. Whole house water filtration systems may cost beaucoup bucks, but it is a lifelong investment that is worth your price in health. The cost in the long run is often times less than bottled water. Counter filters are also less costly.

4. Although controversial, there are studies showing that removing the chlorine and its byproducts from drinking water will reduce this risk of cancer like bladder cancer, colon cancer, rectal cancer, and many other illnesses.

5. Some water filters can remove harmful contaminants while keeping healthy minerals that give pH balance to your drinking water. If you drink filtered water, it can protect your body from diseases and promotes good health.

6. Food tastes better when you cook with it.

Food Allergies and Chlorine

Genetically modified organism, or GMO, is everywhere. The recent negative outcry has been outstanding. People are arguing about the harm and damage it causes humans. To make matters worse, data shows that food grown between GMO pesticides and chlorinated tap water, result in higher numbers of food allergies, and in many cases, cause gastrointestinal problems. Many people suffer from food allergies. More than 15 million people in the US are said to suffer from some kind of food allergy.

tap water
The specific chemical is dichlorophenols. It is a kind of chlorine in some pesticides that kill bacteria. If consumed in large numbers, it can be fatal, cause renal failure, and even damage the live and other organs.

The most common allergies are those to eggs, peanuts, wheat, milk, fish, shellfish, and soy. These types of allergies make up 90 percent of food allergies, according to a CDC report. The symptoms vary from mild rashes to life-threatening reactions. Some people have to carry Epi Pens in case they encounter food they are allergic to.

Recently, researchers followed 10,348 participants in a U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Of them, 2,548 had dichlorophenol levels measured in urine; 2,211 were included into the study. Food allergies were found in 411 of them, while 1,016 had an environmental allergy. It was concluded that the pesticide chemical could be ingested from eating fruits and juices.

This study suggested that the use of pesticides and other chemicals are indeed associated with food allergies. Unfortunately, it also showed that the trend is increasing as are environmental pollution and the use of pesticides.

drinkable water
Most people would think the easiest solution is to avoid and/or prevent food allergies is to switch to bottled water. However, that is not necessarily always a better solution or even the culprit. Pesticide-treated fruits and vegetables may also cause food allergies. Dichlorophenols are also found in some household cleaning items.

Chlorine is primarily added to water to kill off harmful bacteria. This may also kill all natural bacteria that can cause food allergies.

One alternative is to know what you are buying by reading the labels. Laundry and cleaning products with chlorine should be avoided. It is a good idea in getting a shower filter and not spending a long time in the swimming pool. Luckily, organic foods follow specific codes where organic pesticides must be used in order to be labeled “organic.”

The best solution is to invest in a whole house water filtration system. You can avoid chlorine completely and not have to worry about what is in your water. You and your family are worth the investment!

Dogs Need Good Water Too

Water is not just important of us but also for our dogs. Drinking enough water is important for healthy living. Animals can lose all of their fat and still survive. However, if they lose 10% of body water, they can face serious illness. The quality of water is also something to take into account.

Facts about Water:

Pharmaceuticals like sex hormones, antibiotics, and anti-depressants are often found in drinking water.

Chlorine is toxin used to kill dangerous bacteria.

Fluoride has been linked to cancer in pets.

Dogs can develop giardia from drinking lake, pond, or stream water.

Unfiltered water can contain parasites, bacteria, and other harmful viruses.

Farming chemicals and lawn contaminants have been reported to cause cancer in dogs.

Often found in plastic dog food containers and water bowls BPA can leak out and seep into your dog’s food and water. BPA increases estrogen, decreases testosterone, and harmful to kids. It is also linked to some cancers and Type 2 diabetes.

Knowing this, how do you know what water to give your dog?

Best Water Practices for Your Dog:

wilderness dog

Reusing water bottles for your dog’s water is a big No-No. Most water bottles were only meant to be used once.

For reusable plastic water bottles, look for plastic with #2 HDPE (high density polyethylene), #4 LDPE (low density polyethylene) or #5 PP (polypropylene). These types of bottles do not normally leak out dangerous chemicals. Although, the best option is to use stainless steel.

Even though you can find distilled water in your grocery store, it lacks the beneficial minerals and important nutrients your dog needs.

Invest in a water filter that filters out chlorine and fluoride.

Water fountains are a great way to encourage your dog to drink more fresh, filtered water.

Wash your dog’s bowl at least once a day with hot water and vinegar.

Keep your dog from drinking out of puddles, rivers, and streams.

Use organic fertilizers and keep your dog away from dangerous lawn chemicals.

Deluxe Shower Filtration System
Purchase in a filtered bath or showered for bathing your dog.

Merchants are nice in putting a public dog water bowl outside their establishment, but this can do more bad than good.

Use only green shampoos, cleaning products, and other household products.
Drinking out of a garden hose has the dual negative effect- leaching plastic and consuming chlorine and fluoride.

The Best Water Choice:
It really comes down to investing in a Whole House Water Filtration System. It is beneficial for everyone, and you will not have to doubt if the water is safe to drink.

If money is tight, there are other types of filtered products that are less expensive and better than the standard filtered pitcher found at your local store.
