End of the Summer Water Safety

It’s the end of the summer, time to squeeze in the last couple of weeks at the beach, on the lake, or at the pool. Although these places are fun, it’s good to remember that water safety is important, especially for children. Drowning is the leading cause of death in children ages 1 to 4 and the second leading cause of death in children 1 to 14 according to the CDC. So, to keep your family safe at the end of the summer, here are some tips to remember when you’re around water (from Chris McCuiston, co-founder and CEO of Goldfish Swim School in Michigan).

“1) Know that drowning is a “silent killer.” It occurs in a quiet blink, and drowning only takes seconds.

2) Designate a “water watcher” who will avoid cell phones, iPads, books, magazines and anything else that might distract the adult from watching swimming children EVERY SINGLE SECOND. After all, most children who drown are supervised. Have the grown ups take turns in 30 minutes increments. That way a person doesn’t get too tired or zoned out.

3) Enroll your kids in swim lessons, if possible as early as four months old, but if the infant years have passed, any age is fine. Swimming is an essential life-saving skill with numerous physical, mental and intellectual benefits.

4) Get swim lessons for yourself or any other caregiver who cannot swim or is afraid of water. Not only will your water fears rub off on your children, but by not knowing how to swim, you are eliminating a person with the ability to save a child’s life.

5) Invest in latches, fences and sensors if you own a pool. Again, drowning only takes a second.

6) Notify a supervisor if a lifeguard is distracted from doing his or her job. That means no chit-chatting, flirting or “quickly” checking texts. Also, say something if a lifeguard sits at a station more than 30 minutes. They need to rotate to stay alert. Doing these things eliminates complacency.

7) Take first-aid and CPR. Every second counts.

8) Realize that floaties, noodles and plastic inner tubes do NOT protect against drowning. They are created as water toys, not life-saving devices. Life jackets should be designated as U.S. Coast Guard-approved.

9) Stay humble around water. Over-confidence can lead to accidents.”

Mine Spill To Affect CO, UT, NM, AZ, & Mexico

America’s Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has issued a water warning for areas near Durango, Colorado spreading all the way to Mexico. Last week, the Animas River suffered a toxic spill from a nearby mine, resulting in a mustard-colored contamination. 3 million gallons of lead, cadmium, arsenic, copper, manganese, and iron spilled when federal EPA workers were moving earth trying to control rising water levels in Gold King Mine and prevent an incident such as this one.

“What wasn’t a problem in the past is becoming a problem now because of the increased use of mountain water,” says geology and alpine hydrology professor Mark Williams at the University of Colorado at Boulder. Mark has worked with the EPA in the past to mitigate polluted water from abandoned Colorado mines. Western states together contain 500,000 abandoned mine sites that have the potential to cause pollution issues such as this one.

But issue at hand remains how the water is going to affect the rest of the country and Mexico. The watershed that the Animas River flows into has already contaminated Colorado and Utah and will continue to flow down through the Navajo nation (some parts of Arizona and New Mexico) and Mexico. Farmers, industrial buildings, and the community surrounding the area of the spill have been warned not to use the water until it is deemed safe again. In the meantime, the EPA has sent out teams to clean the river thoroughly so that it can start to self-heal and bring wildlife back to the area. People living in areas affected by the spill can now file claims with the EPA.

The Health Effects of Drinking Water Contamination

Salmonella biofilms incredibly resistant to powerful disinfectants

 Once Salmonella bacteria get into a food processing facility and have an opportunity to form a biofilm on surfaces, it is likely to be extraordinarily difficult, if not impossible, to kill it, according to research published ahead of print in the journal Applied and Environmental Microbiology.

Researchers from National University of Ireland, Galway conducted a study in which they attempted to kill Salmonella biofilms on a variety of hard surfaces, using three types of disinfectant.

“We found that it was not possible to kill the Salmonella cells using any of the three disinfectants, if the biofilm was allowed to grow for seven days before the disinfectant was applied,” says Mary Corcoran, a researcher on the study. Even soaking the biofilms in disinfectant for an hour and a half failed to kill them

The impetus for the study was a European outbreak in which 160 people in 10 countries became ill with gastroenteritis(vomiting and diarrhea) from the Agona serotype ofSalmonella, says Corcoran. That outbreak was traced to meat from a major food-processing facility.

Food Allergies and Chlorine

Genetically modified organism, or GMO, is everywhere. The recent negative outcry has been outstanding. People are arguing about the harm and damage it causes humans. To make matters worse, data shows that food grown between GMO pesticides and chlorinated tap water, result in higher numbers of food allergies, and in many cases, cause gastrointestinal problems. Many people suffer from food allergies. More than 15 million people in the US are said to suffer from some kind of food allergy.

The specific chemical is dichlorophenols. It is a kind of chlorine in some pesticides that kill bacteria. If consumed in large numbers, it can be fatal, cause renal failure, and even damage the live and other organs.

The most common allergies are those to eggs, peanuts, wheat, milk, fish, shellfish, and soy. These types of allergies make up 90 percent of food allergies, according to a CDC report. The symptoms vary from mild rashes to life-threatening reactions. Some people have to carry Epi Pens in case they encounter food they are allergic to.

Recently, researchers followed 10,348 participants in a U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Of them, 2,548 had dichlorophenol levels measured in urine; 2,211 were included into the study. Food allergies were found in 411 of them, while 1,016 had an environmental allergy. It was concluded that the pesticide chemical could be ingested from eating fruits and juices.

This study suggested that the use of pesticides and other chemicals are indeed associated with food allergies. Unfortunately, it also showed that the trend is increasing as are environmental pollution and the use of pesticides.

Most people would think the easiest solution is to avoid and/or prevent food allergies is to switch to bottled water. However, that is not necessarily always a better solution or even the culprit. Pesticide-treated fruits and vegetables may also cause food allergies. Dichlorophenols are also found in some household cleaning items.

Chlorine is primarily added to water to kill off harmful bacteria. This may also kill all natural bacteria that can cause food allergies.

One alternative is to know what you are buying by reading the labels. Laundry and cleaning products with chlorine should be avoided. It is a good idea in getting a shower filter and not spending a long time in the swimming pool. Luckily, organic foods follow specific codes where organic pesticides must be used in order to be labeled “organic.”

St. Louis E. coli investigation focuses on grocery salad bars; as many as 33 people affected

ST. LOUIS — Investigators were looking into a possible link between salad bars at a major grocery chain and 33 suspected E. coli cases in the St. Louis area, a state health official said Tuesday.

The Missouri Department of Health and Senior Services said 26 people have tested positive for the E. coli strain 0157:H7. Results of tests on seven other people were pending.

St. Louis County had just five cases of E. coli in all of 2010, county health department spokesman John Shelton said.

“We are calling this an outbreak, which is a word we don’t throw around loosely,” he said.

State health department spokeswoman Jacqueline Lapine said several of those who became ill had obtained food from salad bars at Schnucks Markets Inc., which operates 66 stores in the St. Louis area. Inspectors have tested food samples taken from lettuce, strawberries and Caesar dressing from those salad bars. All the tests so far were negative.

The Missouri state lab also tested strawberries taken from the home of someone who got sick. Those strawberries also tested negative.

More food testing is planned, Lapine said. Meanwhile, food safety investigators inspected Schnucks stores, warehouses and even food supplier facilities and found no conditions that would allow for E. coli, the state said.

Investigators have now asked the U.S. Food and Drug Administration to extend the investigation up the distribution chain, a move that could lead to inspections of distributors and food producers outside of Missouri, Lapine said.

Lapine said 20 of the people who became ill shopped at Schnucks stores, and 17 of them reported obtaining food from the salad bar. The stores were spread across the St. Louis region.

Illnesses have been reported in people ranging in age from 1 to 94 and live in St. Louis city and four surrounding counties — St. Louis, Jefferson, St. Charles in Missouri and St. Clair County, Ill. None of the illnesses were considered life-threatening.

Schnucks spokeswoman Lori Willis said the chain is cooperating fully with investigators and has removed items that were potential causes.

“There is a correlation between Schnucks and this outbreak, but we won’t know the scope until we can pinpoint a source,” Willis said. “We are the seller of the product, but we didn’t make those items on the salad bar.” …
