Is it better to go cold or hot?

tea

Have you ever wondered what kind of water is best for your body during a meal? We order hot tea when we’re sick but ice cold water after a long day at the beach. Which is best for your overall health? Sorry to upset those ice cold water lovers, but drinking cold water can be harmful, especially if you eat unhealthy. Cold water solidifies oils in your body that you consume after eating and slows digestion. Once the solidified particles react with acids that break down your food, they are absorbed by the intestine faster than solid food. The result is a film that lines the intestine and create fatty deposits that can lead to cancer.

What’s worse, the more oily foods you eat, the more rapidly this process occurs in your body. Eating unhealthily and drinking cold water every time you consume food can lead to other grave health risks such as heart disease and diabetes.

Since it takes energy for your body to cool down low temperature water, that means it takes calories to do so. If you drink warmer water with a meal, like hot soup or tea, all of these risks stated above will be less likely to occur. Take a moment to think about what you’re eating for dinner tonight and pair your meal with a nice green or herbal tea. Or pick a water-based soup like thai coconut or chicken noodle.

All of these steps reduce your risk for illness and diseases. To check out more about heart health, visit http://www.heart.org. To learn more about water, check out filtercon.com or call us at 800-550-1995.

Health Advisory: Do not drink or splash in water from Willamette River

PORTLAND, Ore. – A noticeable layer of scum in the Willamette River has health officials warning people to stay out of the water and by all means, do not drink it.

The scum extends from the southern end of Ross Island to the Fremont Bridge, according to the Oregon Health Authority.

“Water monitoring is underway to determine the species and amount of blue-green algae cells present in the river. The type of species in the bloom will help to identify whether the cells present are those with the potential to produce toxins harmful to humans and animals,” explained OHA spokesman Jonathan Modie.

The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality has taken water samples from the river for testing. Results were expected to be available late Wednesday or Thursday morning.

Children & pets at increased risk

“People should avoid skin contact with water, as well as swallowing or inhaling water droplets, until results of tests are available,” Modie added. “Drinking water directly from the Willamette River could be especially dangerous.”

The toxins can not be removed by boiling, filtering or treating the water with camping-style filters but public drinking water systems can reduce algae toxins through proper filtration and disinfection. Health officials said anyone who draws in-home water directly from the Willamette River in the area should use an alternative water source until the advisory is lifted.

Toxins can cause serious illness, rash

Health experts said that exposure to toxins from blue-green algae can cause people to develop numbness, tingling and dizziness that can lead to difficulty breathing or heart problems, and require immediate medical attention. It can also cause diarrhea, nausea, cramps, fainting or trigger a rash.

Children and pets are at increased risk for exposure because of their size and level of activity.

Fish & shellfish may be tainted

Fish, clams, mussels, or crayfish from the affected water could possibly make people sick, too. Health officials said people wanting to eat fish should remove all fat, skin and organs before cooking it. As for crayfish, the muscle can be eaten, but internal organs and liquid fat should be discarded. It’s best just to avoid eating freshwater clams or mussels from the area.

The public will be advised when the concern no longer exists.

22 tons of Irish cheddar to be destroyed because of E.coli

An estimated 22 tons of Irish cheddar cheese is set to be destroyed after dangerous levels of E.coli bacteria were found in a shipment sent to South Africa, authorities said on Wednesday.

Chief executive Bertus de Jongh said: 'Although 99 per cent of Irish cheese complies with our safety standards, this has happened before' Photo: Alamy

Safety experts classified the hefty cargo as “too risky for human consumption” after it docked in the country’s eastern port of Durban.
Although most E.coli strains are harmless, officials feared that piles of 25-kilo blocks were contaminated with enough bacteria to cause food poisoning.
Hundreds of tons of Irish cheddar are ferried to South Africa every year after a journey that covers around 12,500km, or 6,700 nautical miles.
But port health spokesman Chris Maxon said the container would be returned to its exporter, which has not been named.
He said: “The cheese has been sealed off, and will not be allowed into South Africa.
E.coli was found to be in the food. A certain amount of it is accepted, but the levels here were not in line with safety standards. It was deemed too risky for human consumption.
