Why do our brains need water?

Have you ever had a long night out with lots of drinking and experienced a pounding headache the next day? Well, that’s practically how your brain feels every time you’re dehydrated. The brain needs water for every function it performs because about 60% of its makeup is water. In the brain, water is stored in cells called vacuoles. It uses those cells to distribute water to its complex systems of cells and neurons. When you think, you’re sending electrical impulses across the brain, making connections, forming tendrils of thought and memory (called dendrites), and creating chemical reactions to allow this process to occur. It is a complex biological process that can’t be compared.

Water in the brain acts as a cooling device and also a filter for chemicals and other byproducts.  In the rest of the body, blood performs this task, but in the brain, water does this so that the brain does not overheat or get blocked channels that could cause problems. So, having enough water in your body is extremely important for cognitive function. Here are 6 signs and symptoms that you may be dehydrated:

1) You feel hungry/thirsty

2) You’re tired

3) Your urine is darker in color

4) You feel like you can’t perform cognitive functions as well (math, language, creativity, problem solving)

5) You feel that you can’t concentrate

6) Your short-term and long-term memory is reduced

If you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, DRINK WATER! If you become so dehydrated that you feel dizzy or lightheaded, it is best to see a doctor. You may not be drinking enough water every day, making all of these symptoms more likely and making you less able to perform daily tasks. It’s not easy to say exactly how much water a person should drink every day. This number varies for each person depending on their height, weight, daily activity, and metabolism. If you don’t know how many glasses you should drink, follow the “8 glasses a day” rule and ask your doctor the amount that is best for you.

Nepal Earthquake Means Water Crisis

By now you’ve probably heard about the earthquake in Nepal that killed thousands of people and destroyed many homes. The earthquake was a 7.9 out of 10 on the Richter scale, enough to make most of the Nepal community flee to surrounding areas. This left them without food, shelter, and most importantly, water.

In emergencies like this one, clean water is not readily available to the people that have been affected by the distater. In the aftermath of the Nepal earthquake, refugee camps have been set up to take in the people that have been left without homes. The camps have been relying on military vehicles to bring them large tanks of clean water. After this disastrous earthquake, a large park at the center of Kathmandu has recently been converted into a government-constructed camp and has provided thousands of refugees with clean drinking water.

But, the CEO of the nonprofit WaterAid America says, “It will get worse before it gets better.” Lack of water, along with many other necessities, are becoming more scarce in the area even though many different groups have come in to help the communities of Nepali refugees. All we can do is support groups who do damage control and provide necessities to those in need.

Reducing Water Pollution

It’s inevitable that every system and process on Earth results in some sort of pollution. But thanks to an increase in education about water pollution, presently this is a growing concern. The definition of water pollution is a change in the quality of water, whether it be chemical, physical, or biological. Effects pollution can be harmful to those drinking or using it and particularly dangerous to humans.

water pollution
Water pollution, ironically enough, mostly stems from human impact. Oil tankers and mines contribute greatly to water pollution. Other human sources include factories or sewage treatment plants.

How do can you tell if the water near you is polluted? Well, you can’t tell just by looking at it. The only sure way is to scientifically test a small sample. Many companies, like Filtercon for example, offer test kits to test your water at home for water pollution.

Here are some simple thing you can do in your life to prevent water from being polluted:
fish in polluted water
Non-Toxic Products
Rainwater can wash unsafe substances into nearby rivers, oceans, and other bodies of water. For this reason, try buying products that are not harmful to the environment. This includes BPA-free bottles, artificial air fresheners and disinfectants, chemical fertilizers, and flame retardants. You can find products that aren’t harmful to the environment in most local stores. If you use toxic products, simply dispose of them correctly (take them to hazardous waste sites) so they do not cause water pollution. Make sure that you aren’t dumping chemicals down the drain and check out your city’s local hazardous waste dropoff site.

Motor Oil and Cooking Oil
A good practice is not to allow your car to drip motor oil on the ground. Contact your local waste site and ask them when you can dispose of it properly to them. The same goes for cooking oil and paint, it’s a good idea not to put it down faucet. Many restaurants have a grease bin where they dispose of their cooking oil. If you can’t find a place to properly dispose of your cooking oil, ask a restaurant close by.

Yard Care
The best type of yard fertilizer for your yard is a non-toxic fertilizer, like compost. Toxic fertilizers turn into ocean and lake pollution when it rains. They can also be absorbed in the water supply, which is a result of poor drainage in the yard. It’s also good to not overwater your yard if you are using toxic fertilizer.

Dog Friendly
When walking your dog, clean up after him/her. It is courtesy, of course, but their stool sometimes can find their way to our water supply.

Your Toilet
Some people use their toilet as a garbage can. Please do not make this mistake. It is polluting to add items like dirty diapers, sanitary napkins, and tampon applicators to your toilet drainage. These items could end up polluting the ocean and can damage the water treatment effort.

Say No to Fluoride in Your Water

Kids drinking water

We’ve grown up thinking Fluoride was a good substance for our dental hygiene. In reality, it not only a toxin but a highly toxic fertilizer-industry byproduct that is in our municipal water supply. A water supply which ends up in our very own tap water at home, offices, and other locations. The city of Dallas is one of the many US cities considering the end of fluoridation in our water. The end of fluoridation in Dallas would make it the largest city in the US to stop fluoridating its water and save about $1.8 million dollars. What is making Dallas councillors change their minds about fluoridation?

Professor Paul Connett, who testified on June 11 about water fluoridation and the fluoride health risks. He presented various facts on the dangers of fluoride and how it is not a nutrient and that no biochemical process in humans need fluoride. The Food and Drug Administration classifies fluoride as an “unapproved drug.” 97% of Europe doesn’t even fluoridate their water so why are we? Most people believe that fluoride battles tooth decay but there are better alternatives such as dry brushing or baking soda. Alternatives that won’t lead to possible brain damage, which can be caused by fluoride. There are 11 known industrial chemicals that can harm the brain development in human fetuses and infants. There are currently 7 U.S. cities that have stopped fluoridation in their water supply.

If you are interested in reducing almost all of the fluoride in your water, consider purchasing a Filtercon under the counter and whole house systems. The Under The Counter filter has three stages where water is being filtered and conditioned by Activated Alumina, an Activated Carbon Block filter, and a Granulated Activated Carbon Block filter. It can be portable and used outside of your kitchen sink.  DSCN0880 resizedsm

The Filtercon Whole House Fluoride Filter can be added to the Filtercon Whole House Water Filtration and Conditioning System for a completely maintenance free, great tasting, fluoride free water from every faucet, bath, and shower in your home. Your home tap water will undergo three stages of water filtration and conditioning. Stage one is Activated Alumina, which will reduce the fluoride and Stage two is up to 69 lbs of high grade coconut shell activated carbon. Stage three is up to 20lbs of Quartz (Nature’s own filtration media) and Stage four is K.D.F. 55 Medium considering of high purity copper zinc granules. The water passes through our patented HYDROMAGNETIC  module which conditions the water non-chemically by restructuring and realigning the polarity of the mineral molecules without removing those healthy minerals from the water.  filterconfluoride

Ways You Can Conserve Water during a Drought

Water Glass

How to Save Water during a Drought

1. Conserve water by not running water while you wash the dishes or brushing your teeth.

2. When it rains, collect rainwater to water your garden.

3. Time your showers. The Green Cross recommends you cut off a minute of shower time, which can save about 3,600 litres of water per year.

4. Enjoy cold water? Keep a jug of tap water in the fridge to avoid running the water until it turns cold. Purchase an eco-friendly filtration system for your home to get pure water instead.

5. Don’t waste a drop of water. A faucet dripping water can waste around 15 litres of water a day. Be sure to fix leaking toilets or spinklers.

6. Fitting low-flow adapters on taps and using water efficient showerheads can make a difference.

7. Organic food does not use pesticides. Meat eaters should make a day a week ‘meatless.’ Those who love seafood and fish should make sure they are sustainably sourced.

8. Become informed about embedded water. Apples are 70 litres of embedded water. Hamburgers require 2,400 litres of water!

9. Avoid purchasing bottled water. Use a reusable water bottle with a filtration system to get the purest water possible anywhere.

10. Conserve uses of a washing machine or dishwasher. Only use when there is a full load for dishes or dirty laundry.

11. Recycle as much as you can. Recycle your electronics, papers, plastic, aluminum cans, and cardboard. Recycling one pound of water = 13 litres of water saved!

12. Remember to REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE.

Think of Filtercon when searching for a great water filtration system. Your filtered water will not be wasted with the purchase of our Filtercon Whole House Filtration System. We provide a variety of great products from an Advanced Pure Water Straw to under the counter systems.

Toxins found in the Water of Ohio and Michigan

ap5Water is the source of life. We use it to clean, drink, cook, and more. Imagine having no safe water to clean or drink. Residents of Monroe County and Toledo, Ohio were recommended to stock up on bottled water this weekend due to the toxin, microcystin. Microcystin is a toxin created by the blooms of cyanobacteria, large amounts of harmful algae blooms. Symptoms of drinking the contaminated water with microcystin are nausea, vomiting, and dizziness. If it comes into contact with your skin, it can cause skin irritation or liver and kidney damages. This toxin left 400,000 people in Ohio and Michigan without water to drink, bath, or use at all for almost three days.

During that period of no safe water, thousands of residents had to go out and buy bottled water that suddenly was cost inflated by the demand. After all, Microcystin cannot be removed by boiling water but the use of powered activated carbon (PAC), iron oxide nanoparticles, and ultrafiltation (UF) membranes. However, this was not the first time residents of Toledo had faced microcystin in their water. The World Health Organization has recently set a new provisional guideline value for microcystin- LR of 1.0 microg/L drinking water.

The Toledo Post- Water Ban Instructions for Residents

04toledo1_now-master675

The Toledo Lucas County Health Department provides the following instructions for residents about water usage post- water ban. Please Read.

Toledo city government officials say some residents will need to flush their pipes by running water for 15 minutes. This is only necessary if residents shut off their water on Friday and have not used it since.

How to flush your plumbing system

Please complete these steps in the order set out below. Finish each step completely before moving on to the next step.

  1. Flush ALL hot water taps for 15 minutes

Begin the flushing procedure by opening the hot water taps in your            bathroom(s). Open ALL hot water lavatory (sink) fixtures, hot water bath fixtures, and any     other hot water fixtures, such as kitchens, wet bars, etc. Run these hot water      fixtures for at least 15 minutes. Shut water off after 15 minutes. After you   have   flushed each hot water faucet for 15 minutes, your hot water heater will be safe    for use.

  1. Flush ALL cold water taps for five minutes

Once the hot water tank and hot water piping have been flushed, open ALL of the cold water fixtures, flush each toilet at least one time. Run these cold water fixtures for at least five minutes. Shut water off after five minutes. This does include the water in your refrigerator water dispenser.

  1. Flush ALL remaining faucets and appliances

Open any remaining fixtures such as hose bibs, external faucets or fixtures not used for drinking for at least five minutes to finish the plumbing system flushing. Take additional steps to remove water from other appliances. See How to Flush Plumbing Appliances and Faucets for more information. This includes:

Ice makers

Dishwashers

Humidifiers

Continuous Positive Airway Pressure (CPAP)

Oral, medical or health care devices

Baby formula, food and drinks made with water during DO NOT USE

Water filters

Water Softeners

Reverse osmosis units

Clean Your Ice Makers and Refrigerators

If you have an ice make in your refrigerator, make sure to throw away all the ice.

If you have a filter on your ice maker, make sure to first flush out your refrigerator’s ice maker and then replace the ice maker filter. Check to make sure that you have replaced any filter after flushing cold water supply.  Then flush the cold-water dispenser for five minutes. After flushing these lines, let the ice maker container fill up completely and discard the ice and clean the container before replacing. If you have more than one refrigerator, make sure to repeat the same process.

Water Filters

Clean or change your water filters. If you are unsure of how to change your water filter, call the filter manufacturer for more details.
Pools

If you have added water to your pool after 8/1/2014, make sure to superchlorinate and change the filters.
