Is it better to go cold or hot?

Have you ever wondered what kind of water is best for your body during a meal? We order hot tea when we’re sick but ice cold water after a long day at the beach. Which is best for your overall health? Sorry to upset those ice cold water lovers, but drinking cold water can be harmful, especially if you eat unhealthy. Cold water solidifies oils in your body that you consume after eating and slows digestion. Once the solidified particles react with acids that break down your food, they are absorbed by the intestine faster than solid food. The result is a film that lines the intestine and create fatty deposits that can lead to cancer.

What’s worse, the more oily foods you eat, the more rapidly this process occurs in your body. Eating unhealthily and drinking cold water every time you consume food can lead to other grave health risks such as heart disease and diabetes.

Since it takes energy for your body to cool down low temperature water, that means it takes calories to do so. If you drink warmer water with a meal, like hot soup or tea, all of these risks stated above will be less likely to occur. Take a moment to think about what you’re eating for dinner tonight and pair your meal with a nice green or herbal tea. Or pick a water-based soup like thai coconut or chicken noodle.

All of these steps reduce your risk for illness and diseases. To check out more about heart health, visit http://www.heart.org. To learn more about water, check out filtercon.com or call us at 800-550-1995.

Bladder Problems and Alkaline Water

You may not pay much attention to your urine unless you have to empty your bladder. Urine is very acidic because it’s your body’s way of getting rid of stuff it doesn’t need. If your body is dehydrated, your urine will be more acidic.

bladder problems
There are several health problems like interstitial cystitis that comes from acidic urine. It causes irritation and inflammation inside the bladder. If you suffer from IC, you know what foods to avoid. Diets that are full of green vegetables and plenty of fluids will help reduce the acidity in your urine. Some natural ways of treating IC include eating a raw diet, drinking more juice, and fruit smoothies. Alcohol, smoking, artificial sweeteners, fast food, and spicy foods can only aggravate the acidity. Also, women are more likely to get a urinary tract infection if they do not drink enough fluids.

Your first impression might be to drink more water to lessen the acidity. However, most tap water is full of contaminants because of the treatment process. This might include chlorine and fluoride. Both of which are toxic for the body and should not be consumed. Tap water is usually acidic in pH as is most bottled water.

alkaline water
Acidic water does more bad than good. It leaches minerals from your bones and organs, and over time, can cause some serious health problems.

Most acidic bodies are the result of dehydration. With the right kind of water, these bladder problems can be reduced. One of the best ways to alkalize your body is to drink more alkaline water. Water is normally considered alkaline if it has a pHof 8 or higher. Within a week of drinking alkaline water, the body can return to normal pH levels, reducing significantly the symptoms of IC or other acidic problems like urinary tract infections. Whereas, eating alkaline foods and keeping a diet to reduce the body’s acidity would take months.

There are some studies that suggest alkaline water slows bone loss but no concrete studies have determined this. A study by Dr. Jamie Koufman and Dr. Nikki Johnston found that alkaline water can reduce the symptoms of acid reflux. Other studies suggest that alkaline water can help people with asthma.

How do you get alkaline water? From an alkalizer machine. An alkalizer is attached to a water source like a kitchen faucet and reduces acidity of water. Some alkalizers cost thousands of dollars. There are more affordable machines that fit right under the counter.

Food Allergies and Chlorine

Genetically modified organism, or GMO, is everywhere. The recent negative outcry has been outstanding. People are arguing about the harm and damage it causes humans. To make matters worse, data shows that food grown between GMO pesticides and chlorinated tap water, result in higher numbers of food allergies, and in many cases, cause gastrointestinal problems. Many people suffer from food allergies. More than 15 million people in the US are said to suffer from some kind of food allergy.

The specific chemical is dichlorophenols. It is a kind of chlorine in some pesticides that kill bacteria. If consumed in large numbers, it can be fatal, cause renal failure, and even damage the live and other organs.

The most common allergies are those to eggs, peanuts, wheat, milk, fish, shellfish, and soy. These types of allergies make up 90 percent of food allergies, according to a CDC report. The symptoms vary from mild rashes to life-threatening reactions. Some people have to carry Epi Pens in case they encounter food they are allergic to.

Recently, researchers followed 10,348 participants in a U.S. National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey. Of them, 2,548 had dichlorophenol levels measured in urine; 2,211 were included into the study. Food allergies were found in 411 of them, while 1,016 had an environmental allergy. It was concluded that the pesticide chemical could be ingested from eating fruits and juices.

This study suggested that the use of pesticides and other chemicals are indeed associated with food allergies. Unfortunately, it also showed that the trend is increasing as are environmental pollution and the use of pesticides.

drinkable water
Most people would think the easiest solution is to avoid and/or prevent food allergies is to switch to bottled water. However, that is not necessarily always a better solution or even the culprit. Pesticide-treated fruits and vegetables may also cause food allergies. Dichlorophenols are also found in some household cleaning items.

Chlorine is primarily added to water to kill off harmful bacteria. This may also kill all natural bacteria that can cause food allergies.

One alternative is to know what you are buying by reading the labels. Laundry and cleaning products with chlorine should be avoided. It is a good idea in getting a shower filter and not spending a long time in the swimming pool. Luckily, organic foods follow specific codes where organic pesticides must be used in order to be labeled “organic.”

The best solution is to invest in a whole house water filtration system. You can avoid chlorine completely and not have to worry about what is in your water. You and your family are worth the investment!

Understanding Water Quality

Although we live in an era when water doesn’t need to be boiled anymore, there are many reasons to be concerned about your water quality. You may think you are drinking crisp, clear water, but you might be doing more bad than good. Unless you have a scientific lab available at your fingertips, you can’t tell the water quality by looking at it. Before you take your next sip of water, let’s look at why you should care about the water quality coming from your tap.

At the most basic level, water quality is the chemical, physical, and biological characteristics of this precious commodity. Mostly, we assess water quality in Mother Nature, human usage, and drinking water. Humans have requirements for water quality as imposed by government agencies. The United States Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) sets standards for scientific and technical decisions on water. As different concerns are addressed, different standards are applied and suggested. This undoubtedly leads to heated political discussions as environmental scientists rush to identify the fate of contaminants in natural water bodies. Policymakers and environmental lawyers also help put in place legislation to improve water quality at the local level. Large urban cities like San Diego have water quality reports available on their public utilities website.

Contaminants in untreated water can carry harmful viruses and bacteria. If consumed, humans can become very ill. Nearly 1.7 million people die each year from water-borne illnesses they drank or bathed in. Most of the victims are children, living in sub-Saharan Africa and southern Asia. However, it has, and still can, affect people in the US. Water quality varies from area to area. This also goes for sewage and industrial pollution. Local geology and ecosystems should also be considered in the variation of water quality between regions.

For these reasons, water purification technology to remove contaminants is used especially in urbanized areas. Lake water and stream water has not been treated and therefore has uncertain quality. Outdoor enthusiasts will drink water from streams or lake and pick up Giardia lamblia. This is the most common parasite found in untreated water. It may develop within days and lasts as long as 4 weeks, causing diarrhea.

Why take the risk of not knowing where your water is coming from? Investing in a whole house water filtration system is the only sure way of knowing what you’re putting in your body. For those living in apartments or rented homes, there are water filters to suit your immediate needs at a lower cost of what it would take to install an entire system in your home.

Fight the Common Cold by Drinking Water

Are you feeling miserable? It’s the cold season, and a bug or two is sure to invade. There are several natural remedies to cure the common cold. Eat chicken soup. Drink tea with honey. Use a humidifier. All of these have one common element: water. Who hasn’t been offered “the drink plenty of fluids” advice when they’re sick?

There are many theories behind this. Some say that the extra vitamin benefits of juice is best. While some experts will say that the water is more effective way of replacing fluids lost from a high fever. It is said that water also loosens up mucus and helps with respiratory tract evaporation.

common cold
Normally, you should drink at least 8 to 10 eight-ounce glasses of water a day. When you are sick and experiencing a fever, drinking water can help break up your congestion. If you drink water or juice when you’re sick, you are less likely to become dehydrated, and your throat will remain moist.

When the temperature drops and the winds begin to blow, the air becomes drier. This means that our bodies are not getting as much moisture. When the winter months begin, it should serve as a good reminder to up your water consumption. If you are like most people and don’t care for water during this time, opt for some nice warm tea.

Things to Drink When You’re Sick:
1- Water!
2- Herbal teas
3- Fruit drinks
4- Sports drinks
5- Ginger ale
6- Your mom’s chicken soup

You should also limit your intake of Coke, alcohol, and coffee. Sadly, caffeine acts like a diuretic and may dehydrate you. However, the best and most effective thing to do to feel better is to stay warm and get plenty of rest.

Water can not only help you fight a cold, keep you hydrated, but studies have shown that it can help you lose weight. This is great news especially during the months we avoid the gym.

Grape Tomatoes Recalled for Possible Bacterial Contamination

Missouri-based food company Front Row Produce is recalling some batches of its grape tomatoes for a possible bacterial contamination. The grape tomatoes are believed to have been contaminated by the Salmonella bacteria.

Salmonella is a harmful bacterium that commonly contaminates food. These bacteria can cause serious medical harm to the body. Common symptoms of infection caused by the Salmonella bacteria include fever, nausea, stomach pains, vomiting, and sometimes bloody diarrhea. In some cases, a Salmonella infection can cause arterial infections, arthritis and endocarditis. To date, there have been no reports of Salmonella infection that are linked to the recalled tomatoes.

The recalled grape tomatoes were supplied by company Rio Queen Citrus, a Texas-based company. The product was sold in 10-pound bulk containers, as well as in 10-ounce pint containers. The tomatoes are packed in clear plastic, with the label on top of the pack. Although there is no lot number on the packages, affected lot numbers are the following: 2310802, 2510410 and 2310405. Recalled grape tomatoes that were sold in bulk are packed in a plain, brown-colored cardboard box, indicating the lot number 2310801. The affected grape tomatoes were distributed and sold in different food retail stores in Illinois and Missouri.

As of December 1, 2011, all shipments of Front Row Produce’s Grape Tomatoes packed in 10-ounce containers have a lot number printed on a green sticker that is placed on the bottom of the packaging. Thus, any packaging that does not have this green sticker should be considered part of the recall. Consumers who have questions about the product can call Front Row Produce at 314-241-4700.
