How San Diego is Saving Water during the Drought

Last week the San Diego community received the 2014 Annual Drinking Water Quality Report handbook. In it contains information about where the city’s water is sourced from, how the water treatment process works, how the city is diversifying our water, and how the city is moving towards more sustainable practices.

By 2035, the city of San Diego plans to have 1/3 of its drinking water supplied through a program that purifies recycled water. It is planned to produce about 15 million gallons of water for the city each day. The technology used to do so requires membrane filtration, reverse osmosis, advanced oxidation with ultraviolet light, and hydrogen peroxide. The city tested this method through a one-year project using 9,000 water quality tests and daily monitoring to ensure that no contaminants were present in the recycled water. The California Department of Public Health and San Diego Regional Water Quality Control Board approved the recycled water purifying process as it met all federal and state drinking water standards.

San Diego is also exploring ways to use groundwater basins to provide water storage, capture rainwater for recycling purposes, and implement an ocean desalination plant to produce desalinated water for use throughout San Diego County.

The 2014 Water Quality Report also states that the city has been mandated to reduce its water use by 16% as a whole. They are asking residents and businesses to identify where they can most save water and give tips on the best ways to do so. Some of these include: only watering your lawn two times per week, putting low-flow heads on your faucets and showerheads, and evaluating your pipes for possible water leaks. They are also urging residents to use the City’s Public Utilities Department website, wastenowater.org, for water-saving resource guides.

Are you wasting water throughout your home? Filtercon Technologies is a full-line water treatment company. They have whole-house water filters that don’t waste water, save you money, and keep you healthy! They are one of the most trusted water filtration systems in the state, and work mostly by referral. The Difference Between a Standard and Quality Water System

bad brita

Have you ever thought about the difference between a Brita/refrigerator filtration system and an under-the sink alkaline/whole house water filtration system? Believe it or not, there is a huge difference. Most Brita systems/refrigerator water systems have carbon filters that take out chlorine and some fluoride, but do not remove bacteria from local city water. However, most under-the-sink alkaline systems and whole house water filtration systems do remove bacteria as well as arsenals, heavy leads, and chlorine. These systems are good for skin and hair because the water is cleaned to a degree where no harmful contaminants are absorbed into your skin. After 15 minutes in a shower with regular tap water, your body absorbs 63% of everything in the water. If there are microorganisms, heavy metals, and contaminants, your body is taking in all of those harmful agents.

Water filtration systems aren’t just a product with a one-time use, they’re products that can be used every day and increase your lifestyle and health overall. Because filtration companies are selling a product that enhances people’s lives, they feel good about their products, and you should too.

“Remember, [they] are not selling a water system; [they’re] selling health and wellness, providing a safety net, making the world a cleaner place, preventing waste, preparing children for a brighter future, and saving consumers from wasting money. With a water system, people will feel better, they will look better, and they will live in a better environment.”

How do water filtration system companies create value that encourages people to buy their systems? There are two ways; using advertisement methods or working by referral. Many high-quality water filtration companies like Filtercon Technologies don’t have time to waste on advertisement, so we work through referral and targeting specific groups of people. New homeowners are the top response group for filtration companies like ours because, well, they’re in a new place and need a system to filter the water in their new home. By targeting homeowners that are knowledgeable about water health and are passionate about living healthy lives, quality water filtration companies can create connections with clients and give them the most for their money. Filtercon Technologies uses this method so that our quality water filters can reach these specific groups of people.

What Is Your Filtered Water Dispenser Doing For YOU?

Many cities, including San Diego, treat their water to kill off harmful bacteria and parasites. What many people don’t know is that impurities such as copper, aluminum, pesticides, and other toxins can still remain in the water even after being treated. Along with these impurities, city water usually doesn’t taste very good. The reason is because chemicals such as chlorine used during the water treatment process attempt to remedy these problems, but give the water an unpleasant taste. For this reason, many people purchase filtered water dispensers to further purify their water. Filtering dispensers help in eliminating these impurities and can also make the water taste better.

Water Dispenser
Research shows that a filtered water dispenser will save you roughly $600 a year if you were to contin-ually buy 16-ounce water bottles. Furthermore, some people like to bottle their own filtered water. By doing so, they reduce plastic waste and save money. Talk about a win-win situation!

Water dispensers come in different shapes and sizes. Some conveniently fit right into your refrigerator door, others come with a bigger container for larger quantities of water.

After reading all of this information, you might want to rush out and buy yourself a filtering water dispenser. Before you do that, let’s look at the advantages and disadvantages…

Advantages

  • No plumbing is required
  • Most are easily stored in a refrigerator and are usually portable
  • With so many different types on the market, you can choose one that suits your needs and budget
  • Cleanup is very simple. The only thing you should have to do is replace the dispenser’s filter
  • User-friendly. Most people understand how to use dispensers without a manual or guidebook

plastic water bottle pollution
Disadvantages:

  • Although perceived as safe, try to keep them away from dust. They can easily become a breeding ground for diseases
  • Cost. The water dispenser itself does not cost much, but it requires a new filter after so many uses. This extra expense adds up, especially during the summer when people are drinking more water
  • Check the quality of the plastic before you make the purchase. If it is made of harmful plastics (like BPA), you could be drinking chemicals just from the dispenser itself rather than the water. Read our article on: BPA Free Water Bottles

The best way to find drinking water from a trustworthy source is to invest in a whole house water filtration system.  These systems filter water throughout your entire home and eliminate 90% of harmful chemicals. They reach your faucets, your showers, and your hoses outside so that everywhere you go in your home, you’re getting clean, pure water. Without the added chemicals in your shower water, your skin and hair will start to feel more clean and healthy. The long term effects on your health alone are worth the investment in one of these systems.

Benefits of Alkaline Water

darwinbellPhoto by Darwin Bell

1. Restores the pH balance in the body.

  • The antioxidant minerals in water, such as magnesium, calcium manganese and zinc, can help neutralize harmful free radicals in the body. Ionized Alkaline water tastes lighter with a pleasantly sweet flavor than comparable non-ionized alkaline mineral water. Some minerals, such as calcium are 30% easier absorbed from water than from food based sources.
  • A higher pH in the body reduces the need for fat and cholesterol to protect the body from damaging acids.
  • Negatively charged hydroxyl ions, (OH -) found in abundance in alkaline water, act as natural antioxidants and donate electrons, neutralizing harmful free radicals.
  • Alkaline water tastes lighter with a pleasantly sweet flavor.
  • Improves the body’s absorption of essential nutrients
  • Improves body function by cleaning your cells from the inside out.
  • Using water with a higher pH level improves the taste of beverages and food.
  • Cooking with alkaline water improves the taste and quality of foods and using acidic water when boiling eggs improves their quality.(Minerals must be present in your tap water to be present in your ionized alkaline water.)
 2. Provides superior hydration and nutrition at the cellular level.
  • Ionization breaks clusters of water molecules into smaller micro-clusters, reducing the size of the clusters from the 11-16 molecules in standard water to just 5-6 molecules in ionized water. Smaller clusters pass through cell walls more easily and hydrate the cells more quickly.
  • Faster hydration allows the body to regulate its temperature more efficiently
  • Micro-clusters of mineral-bearing ionized water also deliver nutrients more efficiently to the cells.

3. Detoxifies cells more efficiently than standard drinking water.

  • Alkaline water raises the pH of your urine, which may help excrete acidic toxins in the body using a process called ion-trapping. Doctors use this method to detoxify poisoning victims in the emergency room. Drinking alkaline water may stimulate a much milder form of ion trapping than doctors use.
  • The negative charge of ionized alkaline water will attract the positive ions of acids and neutralize them within the body.

What’s In Your Bottled Water – Besides Water?

water bottles

Pure, clean water.

That’s what the ads say. But what does the lab say?

When you shell out for bottled water, which costs up to 1,900 times more than tap water, you have a right to know what exactly is inside that pricey plastic bottle.

Most bottled makers don’t agree. They keep secret some or all the answers to these elementary questions:

  •         Where does the water come from?
  •         Is it purified? How?
  •         Have tests found any contaminants?

Among the ten best-selling brands, nine — Pepsi’s Aquafina, Coca-Cola’s Dasani, Crystal Geyser and six of seven Nestlé brands — don’t answer at least one of those questions.

Only one — Nestlé’s Pure Life Purified Water — discloses its specific geographic water source and treatment method on the label and offers an 800-number, website or mailing address where consumers can request a water quality test report.

The industry’s refusal to tell consumers everything they deserve to know about their bottled water is surprising.

Since July 2009, when Environmental Working Group released its groundbreaking Bottled Water Scorecard, documenting the industry’s failure to disclose contaminants and other crucial facts about their products, bottled water producers have been taking withering fire from consumer and environmental groups.

A new Environmental Working Group survey of 173 unique bottled water products finds a few improvements – but still too many secrets and too much advertising hype. Overall, 18 percent of bottled waters fail to list the location of their source, and 32 percent disclose nothing about the treatment or purity of the water. Much of the marketing nonsense that drew ridicule last year can still be found on a number of labels.

EWG recommends that you drink filtered tap water. You’ll save money, drink water that’s purer than tap water and help solve the global glut of plastic bottles.

We support stronger federal standards to enforce the consumer’s right to know all about bottled water.

Until the federal Food and Drug Administration cracks down on water bottlers, use EWG’s Bottled Water Scorecard to find brands that disclose the water’s source location, treatment and quality and that use advanced treatment methods to remove a broad range of pollutants.

173 Bottles were surveyed by the Environmental Working Group.

Say No to Fluoride in Your Water

Kids drinking water

We’ve grown up thinking Fluoride was a good substance for our dental hygiene. In reality, it not only a toxin but a highly toxic fertilizer-industry byproduct that is in our municipal water supply. A water supply which ends up in our very own tap water at home, offices, and other locations. The city of Dallas is one of the many US cities considering the end of fluoridation in our water. The end of fluoridation in Dallas would make it the largest city in the US to stop fluoridating its water and save about $1.8 million dollars. What is making Dallas councillors change their minds about fluoridation?

Professor Paul Connett, who testified on June 11 about water fluoridation and the fluoride health risks. He presented various facts on the dangers of fluoride and how it is not a nutrient and that no biochemical process in humans need fluoride. The Food and Drug Administration classifies fluoride as an “unapproved drug.” 97% of Europe doesn’t even fluoridate their water so why are we? Most people believe that fluoride battles tooth decay but there are better alternatives such as dry brushing or baking soda. Alternatives that won’t lead to possible brain damage, which can be caused by fluoride. There are 11 known industrial chemicals that can harm the brain development in human fetuses and infants. There are currently 7 U.S. cities that have stopped fluoridation in their water supply.

If you are interested in reducing almost all of the fluoride in your water, consider purchasing a Filtercon under the counter and whole house systems. The Under The Counter filter has three stages where water is being filtered and conditioned by Activated Alumina, an Activated Carbon Block filter, and a Granulated Activated Carbon Block filter. It can be portable and used outside of your kitchen sink.  DSCN0880 resizedsm

The Filtercon Whole House Fluoride Filter can be added to the Filtercon Whole House Water Filtration and Conditioning System for a completely maintenance free, great tasting, fluoride free water from every faucet, bath, and shower in your home. Your home tap water will undergo three stages of water filtration and conditioning. Stage one is Activated Alumina, which will reduce the fluoride and Stage two is up to 69 lbs of high grade coconut shell activated carbon. Stage three is up to 20lbs of Quartz (Nature’s own filtration media) and Stage four is K.D.F. 55 Medium considering of high purity copper zinc granules. The water passes through our patented HYDROMAGNETIC  module which conditions the water non-chemically by restructuring and realigning the polarity of the mineral molecules without removing those healthy minerals from the water.  filterconfluoride

Ways You Can Conserve Water during a Drought

Water Glass

How to Save Water during a Drought

1. Conserve water by not running water while you wash the dishes or brushing your teeth.

2. When it rains, collect rainwater to water your garden.

3. Time your showers. The Green Cross recommends you cut off a minute of shower time, which can save about 3,600 litres of water per year.

4. Enjoy cold water? Keep a jug of tap water in the fridge to avoid running the water until it turns cold. Purchase an eco-friendly filtration system for your home to get pure water instead.

5. Don’t waste a drop of water. A faucet dripping water can waste around 15 litres of water a day. Be sure to fix leaking toilets or spinklers.

6. Fitting low-flow adapters on taps and using water efficient showerheads can make a difference.

7. Organic food does not use pesticides. Meat eaters should make a day a week ‘meatless.’ Those who love seafood and fish should make sure they are sustainably sourced.

8. Become informed about embedded water. Apples are 70 litres of embedded water. Hamburgers require 2,400 litres of water!

9. Avoid purchasing bottled water. Use a reusable water bottle with a filtration system to get the purest water possible anywhere.

10. Conserve uses of a washing machine or dishwasher. Only use when there is a full load for dishes or dirty laundry.

11. Recycle as much as you can. Recycle your electronics, papers, plastic, aluminum cans, and cardboard. Recycling one pound of water = 13 litres of water saved!

12. Remember to REDUCE, REUSE, and RECYCLE.

Think of Filtercon when searching for a great water filtration system. Your filtered water will not be wasted with the purchase of our Filtercon Whole House Filtration System. We provide a variety of great products from an Advanced Pure Water Straw to under the counter systems.
