Drinking Water and Weight Loss

Weight Loss

With summer comes so many delicious things to eat and drink; hot dogs and hamburgers at barbecues, ice cream from your favorite shoppe, and fruity frozen drinks with tiny umbrellas. Although these are wonderful every once in a while, they’re not the healthiest foods. If you’re trying to get back on track after one too many chili dogs, then you should at least consider this easy way to help with weight loss: drink more water!

WebMD describes a study done that followed people who changed their daily diets to include 8 glasses of water/day. The results showed that these people felt more full and did not eat as much. Their metabolisms increased by 30% within 30-40 of drinking 17 oz of water. For men, metabolic rate increased because of fat burn. In women, metabolic rate rose due to the increase in the breakdown of carbohydrates.

Researchers estimated that over a year, more than 17,000 calories were saved due to the increase in water consumption. That equaled to the study participants being about 5 lbs lighter throughout the year. In actuality, almost half of the calories burned from drinking water was due to the body’s attempt to heat the ingested water.

No matter if you’re trying to lose weight or just trying to be more healthy, you should always try to drink as close to 8 glasses a day as possible. Water is not only 70% of your body’s makeup, it fuels your brain and organs to keep your processes running smoothly. The best kind of water for your body is water that has no contaminants, chlorine, heavy metals, etc. You can make sure that you’re getting pure water by buying a filtration system for the tap water that goes through your pipes. Drinking Water to Lose Weight

Are you trying to lose weight? Did you know that pills, clenses, and body wrap are not as effective in losing weight as drinking water. That’s right. The easiest and best way to lose weight comes right out of your kitchen faucet.

One well-known diet secret is to drink an 8-ounce glass of water before eating. Doing this fills you up, cutting back on your portion size. What is not well-known is that this little trick will help keep it off for a year maybe longer.

Why is drinking water to lose weight so effective? First off, it keeps you full longer. It also prevents you from drinking soda or other high calorie drinks. Some studies have shown that the routine drinking water to lose weight served as a reminder of the goal: weight loss. Once the weight was lost, drinking water before a meal also served as a reminder to maintain a healthy weight.

Considering the negative effects of clenses and pills on the body, drinking water to lose weight has very low risks. Water is not as costly as fitness trainers or can cause the damage as over the counter diet pills. A recent study in obese people between the ages of 55 and 75 showed that drinking water before a meal can also slow down weight gain.

However, drinking too much water is not good for you. If you drink massive amounts of water, you can develop a condition called hyponatremia, or low sodium levels in the blood. This leads to confusion, irritability, seizures, and can even lead to a coma.

So what is a good amount of water to drink? While each person’s hydration needs are different, the Institute of Medicine advises that men and women try to consume about 3.7 and 2.7 liters of water a day, respectively, including water found in food and other beverages.

Before you run out and buy a water bottle to truck along in your weight loss journey, proceed with caution. Some water bottles tend to leak Bisphenol A(BPA) into your water. This chemical causes your body to produce more estrogen, which affects how your body stores fat. Too much estrogen in either a man or woman causes them to accumulate fat more easily. That is, the entire principal of drinking water to lose weight is a lost cause.

Here are some great drinking water to lose weight tips:

  • Substitute sugar drinks with water- There usually is no nutritional value in these sugar drinks anyways. If you like a little flavor in your drink, try green tea or citrus-flavored water.
  • Drink cold water- Studies have shown that the body produces more energy to warm up cold water, elevating the metabolism.
  • Follow a healthy diet along with your water drinking- If you are ever hungry, drink water. It is more filling, and the best part is that is has no calories.
  • Try replacing a single meal with water- Don’t think of it as fasting but rather as hydrating your body.
